Simplify Fractions
A fraction is given with a common factor on both lines and has to be cancelled down to lowest terms. The answer is worked out by dividing both numbers, so the habit is established before fractions have to be added together.

Equivalent Fractions
One line of a pair of equal fractions is incomplete and the missing number has to be found. The numerator is left blank rather than marked with a question mark, so it reads as a gap to fill in, and there is no answer line: the equation already has somewhere to write the answer. Both lines are multiplied by the same factor, so the work is the inverse of simplifying.

Adding and taking away fractions that share a denominator, so only the top line changes. The basics leave the answer in lowest terms already; the harder ones need cancelling down as a second step, which is the point where this is usually lost.

One denominator is a multiple of the other, so one line is converted and the rest is the same-denominator work again. Both the sum and the difference come out in lowest terms, which keeps the answer sheet unambiguous.

A fraction of a whole number, which is where the link between fractions and division is made. Unit fractions come first, where the whole job is dividing, then fractions with a numerator above one, where the answer is one part multiplied up. Every amount is a multiple of the denominator, so every answer is a whole number.

Two fractions are put side by side and the sign that makes the statement true has to be written in the gap between them. The basics can be judged by looking; the harder comparisons need a common denominator or cross multiplication.
